The challenge
The challenge was designing a tournament logo for the Long Beach Match Play (LBMP) that worked with the other Long Beach Golf Festival (LBGF) logos.
My role
As the graphic designer who collaborated to create other LBGF tournament logos, I created the LBMP logo design to fit within the same theme. I wanted the LBMP logo to feel related to the tournament logos yet stand out from a colour perspective.

Concept sketches for the LBMP tournament logo design.

After sketching, I began digital concepts and worked on directions featuring surfboards and palm trees.

After experimenting with different directions, I experimented with the placement of the waves around the tournament name in the badge.

I presented colour palette options next to other LBGF events like the Men's City Challenge and the Men's City Championship for comparison.

The solution
I decided to use the same brand typeface as used for the LBGF tournament logos. I chose a colour to pair with the brand's blues so the LBMP logo was distinct enough but on theme. Keeping to the illustrated logo theme, I featured waves, a fairway, a green with a flag, a surfboard and a palm tree. I chose a different shape for the LBMP logo so that the badge would be unique from the other tournament logos. All of these elements were wrapped and bordered with a badge to keep the logo usable on a variety of different backgrounds.
